Unit 15

Dative Prepositions

The dative case is used to identify an indirect object or the object of a dative verb.

Er gibt ihr einen Ring.

He gives her a ring.

The indirect object is ihr in the example above.

Sie helfen dem Mann.

She helps the man.

In this example, the object of the dative verb helfen is dem Mann.

The dative case is also used after dative prepositions.

Unlike the other dative prepositions, gegenüber usually follows its noun object.

Dem Sofa gegenüber stand ein Tisch.

A table stood opposite the sofa.

All nouns make a declensional change from the nominative to the dative, and this dative form is the one required following dative prepositions.
